SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Henry Anderson and John Keogh, high sheriffs of city of Kilkenny, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning convicts in Kilkenny jail, and urging their removal to Cork convict depot. States that the jail 'is so insecure that nothing but Sentries nearly surrounding it prevent the prisoners from Escaping'; and emphasises its overcrowding and unhealthiness - 'six and seven persons at a time confined in a small cell'. States that 2 of the convicts, James Clancey and Kenny Stapleton, have attempted to escape and free the other prisoners, and urges their immediate removal. Encloses return of convicts held in jail in Kilkenny city, listing the names, ages, date of trial, sentence, state of health, and notes on the character and behaviour of convicts, 3 male and one female. Return signed by Thomas Tallent, keeper of Kilkenny city jail, and by Thomas Tallent, assistant. |
