Letter from William Kemmis, Dublin, concerning the claim of George Johnson to a reward for the apprehension of the murderers of Lord Kilwarden

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from William Kemmis, crown solicitor, Treasury Chambers, Dublin Castle, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to an application for compensation from George Johnson who claims he apprehended two persons for the murder of Arthur Wolfe, Lord Kilwarden [who was killed during the 1803 rebellion, on Thomas Street, Dublin, 23 July 1803]. Encloses a petition from Johnson, a bricklayer of Stillorgan, County Dublin, to the lords of His Majesty’s Treasury, complaining of having been cheated out of the reward for the capture of murderers of Lord Kilwarden, and seeking a measure of relief or compensation. Recall on 25 July while a sergeant in the Arklow yeomanry, County Wicklow, he identified and captured, using no other weapon than the ‘spoke of a car wheel’, those guilty of the crime [McIntosh and Freeling]. After having put them in a local guard house, he alerted Abraham Coates, magistrate and lieutenant in the yeomanry of County Wicklow. But he complains Coates had the two prisoners transmitted to Dublin, and subsequently accepted a reward of £500 ‘for what he had no hand or merit in’.
