Letter from Maj Samson Carter, [magistrate], Kingscourt, [County Cavan], to Gregory, returning a number of documents about the current state of County Meath, proposing to move infantry to Slane, [County Meath] to counter the general insubordination. Returned correspondence includes letters from Alexander Saunderson MP, Castle Saunderson, Belturbet, [County Cavan], commenting about the state of the country, having obtained reassurances from Catholic priests Rev Luke O’Reilly, Mullagh, and J Fitzsimmons, John Lynch, [Killeenkere, County Meath], also Mr Donnelly, magistrate; letter from Rev Atkinson Caffrey, Mullagh Glebe, [County Cavan], having arrested Michael Kellett, Rosehill [County Meath] for a burglary on Thomas Reily’s house, Mullagh, and pointing out how tenants of Mr Winter, Mr James Saunderson are too intimidated to form a ‘watch and ward’ for the parish; also, letters from RR] Fitzherbert, Seapoint, Blackrock, [County Dublin], warnng that the peasantry of Meath are procuring more arms from Dublin; Maj Alexander Armstrong, 42 Lower Gardiner Street, Dublin, finding that Meath is in a very unsettled state and mentioning outrages enacted against Mr Farrell, Moynalty, and a letter from T[B?], [County Meath], on the need for more police. Lastly, includes an anonymous letter to Saunderson and all gentlemen, referring to a provocation by Protestants in Bailieboro [County Cavan], promising to quell all nocturnal excursions on condition that he discharge the police ‘the only spurr [sic] of irritation’, give abatements to his miserable tenants, and give work to the poor. |
