SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of Brown Conloy, Mohill, County Leitrim, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, alleging his brother, John Conloy, is depriving him of an income from the rectorial tithes of the parish of Mohill through use of a forged warrant and seeking his apprehension. States he took a lease of the property and obtained a warrant with his brother for the harvest of 1823. Complains he was later improperly detained by the magistrates and subsequently his brother prepared false books and warrants for the collection of the tithes; asserts his brother together with George Conloy and others robbed him of the sum of £150. Asks that an order be conveyed from government to Viscount Forbes [George John Forbes] and Francis Nesbitt, magistrates, giving them authority to have his brother arrested and charged with forgery. |

Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Meyrick Shawe, private secretary to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a memorandum on the subject of a replacement for the late John Crosdill, musician and composer in the state band. Indicates that Crosdill acted as ‘Master & Composer of State Music’ with a salary of £100 per year and also as kettle drummer with remuneration of £70 per annum. Proposes that Mr Smith be nominated to the first role and Doctor Spring to the second, provided ‘you see no opposition’. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of William Conner, stone cutter, 78 New Street, Dublin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a measure of compensation on account of an unsettled claim for wages for work on the Custom House, Dublin. Reveals details of the background to his claim and contends it was through the duplicity of Henry Harman, works superintendent at the Custom House, that he was denied remuneration following a serious fall from the south portico of the building in 1786. He accuses Harman of being ‘A dishonest man’ who subsequently disappeared with a considerable sum of money that was improperly obtained. Relates that following his recovery from the accident, he was employed at the Royal Military Infirmary, Phoenix Park, Dublin, and also in construction work at various barracks. Unfortunately, he complains, about 6 years ago he and his family were infected by spotted fever, and he is no longer able to support himself. Claims his account of the matter can be verified by Francis Johnston, architect and inspector of civil buildings, Dublin. [See also description CSO/RP/1824/1843]. |

Petition of Dennis Griffin, Ballybunnion [Ballybunion], barony of Iraghticonnor, County Kerry, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a situation of employment in the police, water guards [excise] or any other post under government. Claims he and his family are in need of protection since he took an instrumental part in recovering a cache of 223 half bales of smuggle tobacco that appeared on the nearby strand on 15th March 1825. Remarks with the assistance a number of other persons, the illegal cargo was taken from the ‘midst of a Lawless and tumultuous Multitude’ and subsequently conveyed to the Custom House in the town of Tralee. Stresses the negative ramifications for his immediate connections and observes notice has been given his father by John Leonard to vacate his small land holding. |

Petition of Michael McGovran, late of 27th regiment of foot, George’s Street, Newton-upon-Ayr, Scotland, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting a situation in the police establishment of County Londonderry. States during his 9 year tenure in the army he saw active service in Spain, Portugal and America, but was discharged without pension in 1817. Prior to this, he notes, he served for a period of 5 years in the militia of County Londonderry. Also letter from Major General Sir Herbert Taylor, [military secretary to Prince Frederick, Duke of York, Commander in Chief of British army], Horse Guards, London, to McGovran, stating his application for a pension has been rejected on account of having no just claim. With two certificates inscribed overleaf in favour of McGovran, signed by Lieutenant General Hughes and another. |
