Letter from Edward Wilson, Thurles, County Tipperary, chief police magistrate for County Tipperary, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on disturbed state of barony of Ikerrin, County Tipperary, in particular the lands of Clonboo, part of the estate of Somerset Richard Butler, 3rd earl of Carrick, which are out of lease. Reports the murder of an elderly man, Thomas Kavanagh, 'who those Ruffians mistook for another than had taken a few acres of these Lands'. Also concerning unrest amongst tenants on Lord Hawarden's estate [Cornwallis Maude, 3rd viscount Hawarden], at Dundrum, County Tipperary, 1 June 1821. Encloses copy of notice found left in Kavanagh's house on 29 May 1821 by his assassins, addressed from 'Captain Lightfoot's corps', threatening death to anyone who has recently taken a lease at Clonboo, in place of former tenants. Also note in hand of Gregory, concerning contents of a reply to Wilson's letter [June 1821]. |
