Letter from Lieutenant Colonel Meyrick Shawe, private secretary to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, to Thomas Taylor, clerk, Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, stating the Lord Lieutenant has no objection to an application from the Lord Mayor of Dublin to be appointed a county magistrate of Dublin. Encloses letter from Thomas Abbott, Lord Mayor of Dublin, Mansion House, Dublin, to Shawe, proposing the utility of his exercising the powers of county as well as city magistrate. Asks for leave to make application for the commission to the Lord Chancellor of Ireland [Thomas Manners-Sutton], which he desires to hold ’free of Fees’. |

Letter from Reverend Kennedy Kennedy, Church of Ireland rector of the union of Bourney, Roscrea, County Tipperary, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing displeasure over an investigation of the part played by William Nash, chief constable of police in the barony of Ikerrin, who he accuses of partisan behaviour prior to the ‘burning and tearing’ down of the orange flag from the round tower of Roscrea. Describes the incident as an ‘outrageous insult upon Protestant feeling’ and one that is abhorrent to all persons attached to that denomination throughout the Empire. With annotation on back from the Attorney General [William Conyngham Plunket] stating the substance of the letter from Kennedy is made up of ‘opinion’ and advises it should not be given further consideration. Warns of the activities of an ‘indisposed person’ who will misapply any funds granted by government; he asks for a copy of the original application in order to ‘detect & expose such Conduct’. Reproduces overleaf a letter of reply from Gregory, refusing to advance any aid due to the suspension of all grants following a report from the commissioners of education enquiry. |

Letter from Isaac Topham, assistant secretary, Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor of Ireland, Kildare Place, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, seeking the permission of government to pay salaries to teachers of schools that wish to remain in connection with the society. Refers to a circular issued to schools [who have been in receipt of funding from the Kildare Place Society in the past] asking for a decision over whether they wished to remain in connection with the society or be affiliated with another educational agency. He points out that a number of schools have withdrawn from the society on grounds that salaries paid to teachers are provided by another educational agency, and a further number are awaiting information on the issue of whether a grant of remuneration for teachers will be made by the KPS.
