Letter from Berry Norris, [post master], Lurga, Mohill, County Leitrim, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting to learn if Irish copper coinage will continue in circulation after the 5th January 1826 [when the Irish currency is assimilated with the British] and at what value against the English shilling. Also letter from Norris to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reiterating his plea for information over the continuation of Irish copper money in use. Observes local shopkeepers have engaged in speculation on the currency in expectation of ‘making a profit of 8⅓ p[er] cent’. Seeks direction on the subject in order to obviate public confusion. |

Points out that several hundred people are still in need of having money exchanged and he has been informed by the collector a further issue of £3,500 ‘in shillings and six pences’ may satisfy the demand. |

Petition of the Presbyterian congregation of Dunmurry, County Antrim, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting they be promoted to the status of first class with respect to the payment of the royal bounty or regium donum. Claims at the period of the increase of the bounty in 1803, they were served by ‘a very indolent & careless Minister’ whose lack of drive saw them being classified at the lowest class; however, they enthuse, since 1809 they have continued to grow and prosper and now have the able Reverend Henry Montgomery as minister. Signed by William Hunter, clerk of the session, and John M'Cance, chairman; countersigned by George Augustus Chichester, 2nd Marquis of Donegall, and three others. |

Petition of the gentlemen, clergy and inhabitants of the barony of Erris in County Mayo, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting permission to complete the road running from Castlebar through the barony all the way to the western coast. Indicates that a section of road between the townland of Drum and Elly Bay is awaiting attention, as is a branch from Carn to Broadhaven Bay. They stress the value of having both roads completed since this would open access to the coast and be of considerable public advantage. At Elly Bay, they observe, the ‘King’s Vessels and all others ride at anchor’ and likewise Broadhaven Bay is a key shipping rendezvous and home to the coast guard service. Approval has been given to the proposals, they add, by Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer overseeing public works in the western district. Petition is signed by Major Denis Bingham, magistrate, and 84 others subscribers. |

Letter from Reverend Thomas Blakeney, Church of Ireland vicar of Roscommon and jail inspector, County Roscommon, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing a memorial from the inhabitants of the town of Roscommon and vicinity, County Roscommon, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, proposing the Royal Canal be extended to the town of Roscommon. Highlights some of the economic obstacles that place the region at a distinct disadvantage, such as distance from export markets, lack of local industry and few strong landed proprietors. Stresses the immediate advantages of making a line of canal to the town from Richmond harbour in County Longford, which is about 10 miles away.
