Anonymous letter from Carrick on Suir, County Tipperary, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, complaining of the negative ramifications of a shortage of copper coinage in the town. Suggests the greater part of the problem is due to speculation by holders of copper in expectation of the Irish coinage commanding a favourable exchange rate under the implementation of the Currency Act [6th of George IV, chapter 79], by which Irish money will be assimilated with British. Seeks the intervention of government to enforce the law.

Petition of the inhabitants of the south island of Arran, County Galway, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting advance of a measure of government relief due to the absolute failure of the potato crop. They state the larger part of the 3,000 or so inhabitants on the isles of Arran are presently ‘in a most deplorable state of want’. Indicates the cause of the problem can be traced to a severe drought of last summer and warns the people do not have the means to buy food or provisions. Because of malnutrition, they warn, fever is now on the increase. Petition signed by Michael Gibbons, Roman Catholic priest, and 4 others.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from John Quinn, president, chamber of commerce of Newry, County Down, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, appealing for the intervention of government to enable the commissioners of inland navigation to carry out an extension of the Newry Canal. Encloses copy of letter to the commissioners for the issue of money for public works, laying out the economic rationale for the proposed enlargement of the canal. Calculates a sum of £70,000 will be needed to complete the works which will open up a vital shipping channel between the town of Newry and the sea. Stresses the positive consequences that will accrue such as an increase in revenue and a boost to trade and prosperity. With copy reply on base from John Galloway, secretary to the commissioners for the relief of trade, 37 North Cumberland Street, Dublin, stating that funds in hand are not adequate for the project envisaged. Letter from Major George Warburton, inspector general of police for Connaught, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting on a mental breakdown suffered by Christopher Brunt, sub constable of police, County Galway, 28 December 1825. Encloses an extract of two letters from Mr Malony, chief constable of police, Gort, County Galway, remarking that Brunt has ‘completely lost his senses’ having attempted to kill a man using his sword. Recites the opinion of Dr Mulville that his condition arises from a ‘wound he received in the Head at Ahascragh’. Recommends his detention in a lunatic ward as he is proving most laborious to supervise, 23; 27 December 1825. Also letter from Richard Grace, moral governor, Richmond Lunatic Asylum, Dublin, to Gregory, stating a vacancy now exists for a male patient, 30 December 1825.
