Comments the petty traders are engaged in speculation on the Irish copper coinage and the lower orders ‘are likely to be very much imposed upon’.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, supervisor of convict transportation, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on the unsettled state of affairs on board the convict ship ‘Essex’ at Kingstown harbour [Dunleary; Dún Laoghaire], County Dublin. Observes the prisoners displayed an outright lack of obedience and were openly defiant to the officers in charge; they attacked the ship surgeon and broke and burned a number of benches provided for their use. Indicates a threat to put them on a permanent diet of bread and water brought about the restoration of order. Conveys he has identified a man, a former sergeant, who will be a perfect replacement for Robert Gilbert, the present keeper of the hulk.

Letter from Dr Francis Barker, secretary, General Board of Health, 22 Bagot Street, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on fever in hospitals in the city of Dublin that depend upon public funds. Encloses a report on the fever hospitals in Dublin, for the month ending 31 December 1825; provides statistics on the House of Recovery [Cork Street], the Hardwicke Fever Hospital, Sir Patrick’s Dun’s Hospital and Dr Steven’s [Steevens] Hospital [no data], indicating, for example, the number of patients admitted, deaths due to fever and beds not in use. Notes in letter a slight increase in fever in the city over the course of the month, but observes ‘the proportion of deaths to recoveries has considerably diminished’ over the last three months.

Letter from James Fitzgerald, 11 Molesworth Street, Dublin, to the Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, directing attention to the observations of Mr [John] Egan, a receiver of estate lands in County Galway, on the negative ramifications arising from the assimilation of the Irish and British currency [by the Currency Act: 6th of George IV, chapter 79]. Encloses letter from Egan, Tuam, County Galway, to Fitzgerald, complaining of the confusion caused in his own business transactions on account of a lack of information on the value of Irish coins [which have continued in circulation beyond the official date for assimilation, the 5th January 1826]. Expresses criticism of the Bank of Ireland over their failure to provide new silver and copper coinage and hopes for an extension of time to affect a full exchange.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Rowland Ayres, Ralph Prestidge [also spelt Prestage] and William Erratt, Park, near Arklow, County Wicklow, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting relief over a demand for payment of additional rent on their holdings on the townland of Park. They state their lands were originally granted by John Proby, 2nd Earl of Carysfort, to John Hughes, 60 years earlier, and at that time was estimated to contain 74¾ acres. However, they continue, a more recent evaluation has put the area of ground in question at just 59 acres, and they have settled other taxes and tithe based on the latter calculation. With response on back from John Sealy Townsend, King’s Counsel and legal advisor to the Chief Secretary’s Office, stressing the Lord Lieutenant has no authority to intervene in the case made mention of.

File of papers relating to an application from Thomas Howard, late chief clerk in the police of County Limerick, Shinrone, King’s County [County Offaly], for restoration to public office and settlement of pay arrears. Includes letter from Colonel William Bagwell, Marlfield House, Clonmel, County Tipperary, MP for County Tipperary, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to the claims of Howard whose memorial he encloses. He also raises the issue of a delay in completion of the school house of Clonmel, County Tipperary, 14 January 1826. Also copy of memorandum from the CSO stating Howard received a sum of £40 to aid his removal from Limerick in 1821. Also comments on the reasons for the delay in the school of Clonmel due to a failure of one of the party to sign a contract.
