Letter from James Buchanan, British Consulate, New York, North America, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, expressing support for an application from William Sampson for permission to return to Ireland for a period of 6 months. Observes he is prohibited by act of law from traveling to the land of his birth ‘on account of the part he took in the Rebellion [1798]’. With annotation on top from Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, advising the opinion of the Attorney General [William Conyngham Plunket] and Robert Peel, the Secretary of State, be taken on the matter. Encloses copy letter from Sampson, New York, to Buchanan requesting issue of a passport to return to his family in Ireland to attend to some important business.

Letter from Jonathon Johnson, clerk, Irish Office, Westminster, London, to Thomas Taylor, clerk, Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, enclosing an outline of general rules respecting the rate of fees to be charged by various officers of the Court of Chancery, in pursuance with an act of the forth year of King George IV: compiled by Thomas Manners-Sutton, Lord Manners, Lord Chancellor of Ireland. Refers to the level of fees payable under the act to the pursebearer, the clerk of the crown and hanaper, the porter, the crier, the tipstaff, the court keeper, the deputy clerk of rolls, the secretary, the cursitor, and also ‘Box Money’.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reuben Harvey, president, committee of merchants of Cork, County Cork, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, calling attention to the urgent need for a supply of new copper currency. Refers to the uncertainty engendered by the assimilation of the Irish and British currency [by the Currency Act: 6th of George IV, chapter 79] and asks that the local collector of Cork release his stock of copper in order that trade might be stimulated. He suggests, in future, a 3 or 4 pence silver coin might be put into circulation. Also letter from Thomas Harrison, mayor, Mansion House, Cork, to Goulburn, complaining of a lack of new copper money in circulation and seeking relief. States as matters stand there are ‘constant disputes and differences among the people’ and a further means of disseminating new money need be found beyond that of the customs house.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Reverend Charles Evatt, local inspector of Monaghan gaol, Monaghan, County Monaghan, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on the case of John Cassidy, who was admitted to the jail as insane on 16 February 1824. States he was rejected by the lunatic asylum of County Armagh on account of being an epileptic, so has remained confined in Monaghan gaol since. Observes ‘he has been latterly in a comparatively tranquil state’ and asks for an order from government in respect of his disposition.

File of papers relating to proposals to have the lighthouse on the island of Innishgurt [Inishgurt], Clew Bay, County Mayo, placed under the supervision of the Ballast Board. Includes memorial from the inhabitants of Westport, County Mayo, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, seeking to have the lighthouse of Innishgurt brought under the management of the ballast office and to have the light improved. They stress the absolute necessity of the lighthouse as a marker at sea which is ‘of the greatest utility’ to those who earn their living by fishing, as merchants or revenue boatmen. Signed by Denis Browne, [MP for Kilkenny city], and c48 other persons, c12 January 1826. Also includes letter from John Cossart, secretary, Ballast Office [corporation for preserving and improving the port of Dublin], Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, confirming their acceptance of terms proposed by Howe Peter Browne, 2nd Marquis of Sligo, for the conveyance of ‘that part of the Island on which the Light House stands’ in addition to the light and dwelling house thereon, 25 March 1826.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Peter La Touche [Latouche], [member of the grand jury of County Leitrim], [] Street, to the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, expressing dissatisfaction over the slow progress of public works on the colliery roads near Lough Allen [County Leitrim]. Complains that such unfinished lines of communication represent a real impediment to those companies presently engaged in the mining industry. A further bane of discontent, he identifies, as the incomplete road from Cloone to Mohill in County Leitrim. Request also a response from government to a memorial from the landowners of counties Fermanagh, Sligo and Leitrim, seeking a survey with a view to building a canal between Lough Allen and Lough Erin. Also letter from Alexander Nimmo, civil engineer overseeing public works in the western district, Dublin, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting on the state of completion of the colliery roads and the line between Cloone and Mohill.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Dominick Browne, magistrate for counties Galway and Sligo, Ashford, County Galway, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, recommending the appointment of Anthony Joyce of Connemara to the post of water guard on the bay of Galway. Confides he is ‘man of some intelligence’ and is in possession of useful information on two men who are suspected of committing fraud in the region. Also second letter from Browne reiterating his support for the employment of Joyce and also making a request for assistance for ‘an old faithful Constable’ who displayed notable loyalty during the period of the rebellion [1798]. Makes reference to his representation to the local priest, Reverend P Abbot, to refrain from collecting money from his parishioners as is elsewhere practiced [presumably the Catholic Rent]. He also alludes to some complaints from labourers and tradesmen employed on public works in Connemara or Joyce’s Country, and seeks an investigation. Also damp press reply from Gregory indicating the post sought for Joyce is not at the disposal of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
