Letter from Sir Henry Brooke, Colebrooke, County Fermanagh, to the Chief Secretary’s Office, Dublin Castle, enclosing a memorial from the Presbyterian congregation [General Synod of Ulster] of Maguiresbridge to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting their clergyman, Reverend James W Williams, be appointed to the first class of the royal bounty or regium donum. They claim in number they constituter between 400 and 500 families, and together they subscribe near £70 [per annum] towards the upkeep of their pastor. As a people, they assert, they are ‘uniformly distinguished for habits of Industry, peace and Loyalty’. Also character reference from Reverend Robert Russell, Church of Ireland rector of the parish of Aughalurcher [Aghalurcher], County Fermanagh, Ashbrooke, Brookeborough, in favour of Williams. |

His premises, he stresses, is located along the line of the mail coach road from Dublin to Cork. As to use, he remarks, it would perfectly serve as a school catering for the large number of children living in the vicinity; or equally it might serve as a place to hold petty sessions or a barracks. |

Refers to an earlier memorial seeking relief over an alleged robbery of his property during the rebellion [1798] which he claims was certified by George Augustus Chichester, 2nd Marquis of Donegall, Sir Edward May, Thomas Verner, Belfast [former sovereign of Belfast], and the ‘loyal Bankers and merchants of Belfast’, County Antrim. Comments there is a great want of employment in the area and a local subscription to alleviate the poor has proven ‘totally inadequate’ in the present circumstances. Encloses memorial from the Protestant and Roman Catholic parishioners of the parish of Clondalkin, to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting government relief for the poor of Clondalkin. Estimates those in want of ‘food & fuel’ at around 5,000 people and observes many have been forced to pawn possessions to purchase sustenance. Signed by Reverend P Stafford, parish priest. |
