Letter from Henry S Persse, [land waiter or excise officer], Galway, County Galway, to Lieutenant Colonel Meyrick Shawe, private secretary to Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquis Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, enclosing a memorial requesting extension of relief for his part in the matter of a failed contract to supply the mounted police of the county of Galway. States in good faith he entered an agreement to act as security to James O’Flynn, in conjunction with Myles Burke, a ship chandler of Galway, with a view to the two men fulfilling the contract. However, he laments, following his employment at the port of Newry, County Down, he found the contract was not honoured and responsibility for the failure is now laid on him. Recalls he was earlier made bankrupt by the proceedings of two brothers and remarks he is entrusted with the care of a wife and 12 children. [Contains list of names not given in this description.] |
