SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of Rev Patrick Grady, catholic priest, Keltimagh, Swinford, County Mayo, to Richard Wellesley, Lord Lieutenant, seeking a government pension and outlining his efforts in ‘resisting the inroads of rebellion’ and treasonable practices in his parish of Killeadon. Noting in particular the influence he exerted over his parishioners in 1793 against defenderism; in 1798 against joining the French; in 1807 against the ‘Threshers’ and also noting that he refused to collect the ‘Catholic Rent’. Enclosing a copy of the circular which he sent to the hierarchy in 1817, objecting to the candidature of Rev James Filan and Rev Roger McDermott for the vacant see of Achonry due to their political stances. Also noting that he has incurred the malice of Dr McNicholas [Patrick MacNicholas, catholic Bishop of Achonry], concerning the sale of indulgences. Observing that Rev Jennings of Balinrobe has received a similar pension on account of his loyalty. Also covering letter from Grady, to Henry Goulburn, Chief Secretary. |
