Letter from justices of the peace John Hamilton and Rev Edward Hamilton, clerk, Brown Hall, Ballyshannon, [County Longford], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, relating to an affray at Ballintra, County Donegal, which began when ‘a vast crowd were collected on the Fair green just outside the town, burning a tar barrel, which was understood to be a celebration of the lately granted Emancipation [Roman Catholic Relief Act]’. Additional note annotated by William Gregory, Under Secretary, stating that he will immediately contact Maj Thomas D’Arcy, Inspector General of Police for Ulster, ‘to send a strong Police force to Ballintra and the neighbourhood’. |

Letter from Sir John Harvey, Inspector General of Police [for Leinster], Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, forwarding report he received from chief constable Lt James Crawford, Tullamore, King’s County [County Offaly], reporting that approximately 1000 men assembled in the town on 20 May 1829, ‘with spades on their shoulders, (carried in the manner muskets are by Soldiers’ and ‘proceeded to a field belonging to a [miller Samuel] Robinson of Clara, ostensibly for the object of planting Potatoes for him, but evidently for the real purpose of exhibiting a display of Political Strength’. Also encloses handwritten copy of notice issued by the magistrates forbidding participation in same, with 6 signatures.
