Letter from ES Flinter, Rossmore Lodge, to Maj Tandy, reporting that a deputation from a [Catholic] Association breakfasted in Athy, [County Kildare] on their way to County Tipperary, after which Mr Steele and Rev Lawler, priest of Athy delivered a speech to a crowd of 300 persons who had assembled outside; noting that the Steele abused the Brunswick Club in his speech and was referred to by Lawler as a ‘proper person to command the Army’. Also covering letter from James Tandy, Millbank House, Naas, [County Kildare], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary. Including annotation from the Lord Lieutenant and Gower wishing to know if Flinter could get any witnesses to the speech and noting that the matter is under investigation. Extract from a letter from Mr Woodburn, Chief Constable, Ballingarry, [County Tipperary], to TP Vokes, reporting on a riot and stoning of the constabulary while escorting prisoners from Castletown Fair; naming those who were arrested; noting that both he Mr Massy, Mr Percy and Constable Hodgins were hit, that five prisoners escaped and that the police fired on the crowd; also noting that subscriptions are being gathered to petition parliament and also to have ‘young people educated … that they might not be influenced by a Protestant school education’. Also letter from George Massy, magistrate, Glenwilliam, [County Limerick], to H Woodburn, Chief Constable, noting that they have to submit to the state of things as government have not issued any instructions on how to act; undertaking to attend if any breach of the peace occurs.; adding that ‘had those fellows assembled to have Bonfires on my land I w[oul]d exert the authority of Landlord, and put the matter down’.
