Copied extract from a letter from Thomas Kelly, Killaloe, [County Clare], [probably to William Coffey], reporting on information he received of a large stash of firearms being concealed near Portrue [Portroe], County Tipperary; noting that he was provided with the information by Rev Thomas Moylon, parish priest and George Watson of Garrykennedy; stating that the arms have since been moved to the silver mines in that county; warning that a rebellion will break out if O’Connell is not admitted to Parliament. Also covering letter from William Coffey, Scariff, [County Clare], to Maj Warburton, noting that the correspondent is ‘an intelligent person’. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Dublin, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, noting that the evidence supplied is remarkably similar to the information received from Magill of Portumna, [County Galway] and concluding that Magill’s evidence now appears to be true. Letters from George Warburton, Inspector General, Dublin and Castlegar, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, recommending that Mr Smith, a zealous and long serving chief constable, be superannuated as he now suffers from temporary derangement; recommending the best manner to do this so as not to exacerbate his illness; suggesting that William Henderson be appointed as replacement noting that he already assumes many of the duties. Includes annotations from Henry William Paget, Lord Lieutenant, at first agreeing to the arrangement but later stating that the appointment must go to a chief constable who is about to be let go due to a reduction; later agreeing to Henderson being given an acting position without any further claim to a permanent position.

Letters from J Brown, Chief Constable, Police Barracks, Athlone, [County Roscommon], to Maj Warburton, noting that [Edward] Larkin, Sovereign of Athlone does not agree with Mr Harrison [or Hanniver], constable that an assembly in the town was serious; adding that [William] Carty who was arrested for possessing a stolen sword belonging to [James] McGibney has been liberated; discussing the establishment of a barracks at Cranagh Bridge. Also letter from Edward Larkin, Sovereign’s Office, Athlone, to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, providing an account of the incidents in the town; mentioning that the reports of Carty and a drunken party were made to him by Rev Browne, catholic clergyman. Also newspaper clipping from the ‘Roscommon Journal’ reporting on a meeting of magistrates and landholders of the districts of Roscommon and Strokestown concerning insubordination in their areas. Also memorandum from [Gower], to Maj Warburton, recommending that Brown, Chief Constable be reprimanded for providing an exaggerated report. Affidavits of Graham Wilson, Mathew West, Edward Willis, William Woods and Daniel Fraser, constables and sub constables, Roscommon Barracks, [County Roscommon], claiming that they were shot at by Henry Hazleton and John Leaheny, near Killearney House and that the two men were arrested in possession of Rockite notices and loaded pistols. Also covering letter from [?] Smith, Chief Constable, Roscommon, to Maj Warburton, also reporting on other incidents in his disturbed district. Also covering letter from George Warburton, Inspector General, Castlegar, [County Galway], to Francis Leveson Gower, Chief Secretary, referring to the account of the incident and praising the efforts of Mr Brown, Chief Constable in that district; also commenting on the meeting of magistrates in Roscommon chaired by [Daniel] Kelly, and suggesting that if the gentlemen follow up their resolutions the disturbances in the area will be put down very soon; adding that a proposal for additional constabulary officers may be made at the Quarter Sessions.
