SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from James Browne, Dublin, to Sir Edward B Baker, Military Secretary, Dublin Castle, providing detail of two ships provided for conveyance of convicts to Cove of Cork. The vessels in question, are described as being ‘well adopted for conveyance of convicts’, with space for two hundred and thirty people; as to terms they are ‘offered for that service at rate of 16 shillings per ton’. Encloses detail in same hand indicating conditions of engagement of ships Mary Isabella and Kitty upon which ‘the masters engage to supply the convicts with the necessary Fuel and water while on board’.

Observations from Captain Henry R Draper, on use of brig Atlas for transportation of convicts to Cove of Cork

SCOPE & CONTENT:

3 letters from Captain Henry R Draper, Dublin, to Sir Edward B Baker, Military Secretary, Dublin Castle, regarding engagement of brig ‘Atlas’ under master Robert Black, for transportation of convicts to Cove of Cork. Black’s ship is offered upon payment of sixteen shillings per ton and at a ‘rate of 14 shillings per ton Demurrage if detained more than eight days in the Cove of Cork’; in letter of 29 May, respecting tenders applications, he states ‘by taking the proposal at 20 s[hillings] per ton Register, for the Run to Cork, would be much less expensive than by giving 15 s[hillings] per month because the proposal means to be paid for Five months certain’; in letter of 12 June, Draper affirms that the ‘Atlas’ brig ‘will not require a halfpenny laid out on her saving Provisions and straw’.

Encloses letter from George Dunn, Keeper, Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, with observations on want of clothing of convicts from city of Dublin and reference to recent break out, an incident that might have been prevented, he states ‘had attention been paid to my letter by Sheriff [George] Wheeler and the Irons sent to me as required’; also includes a list of articles of clothing needed by named prisoners at the jail.

Letter with enclosures from George William Stamer, High Sheriff, County Clare, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, regarding presence of fever in Ennis gaol and response. Explains necessity of removing inmates and states he has instigated separation of ‘female felons to a division of the New Jail’. Encloses communication on matter from Dr O’Brien, physician, and Andrew Castle, surgeon, urging removal of prisoners at Ennis jail to facilitate recovery of sick, otherwise they apprehend ‘fatal consequences will be the result’; also letter from O’Brien stressing seriousness of fever outbreak and requesting warrant for removal of prisoners to hospital in new gaol.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Dublin, to Sir Edward B Baker, Military Secretary, Dublin Castle, regarding incarceration of Dublin city convicts at Kilmainham Gaol and threat of escape. Reports he has discovered plan of Dublin city prisoners held in Kilmainham to escape, that they have procured iron bars and ropes with intention to abscond; in such circumstances, he urges, ‘strong measures are absolutely necessary to suppress the violent and, outrageous conduct of the City Prisoners’; stresses it is ‘injudicious’ to hold such convicts at the prison and that ‘responsibility should be thrown upon the Lord Mayor and sheriffs for the security of that part of the jail occupied by city convicts’.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Petition of Mary Callan, widow, Dublin, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting financial aid. States that her husband, Patrick Callan, while attending to his duties as steward of the House of Industry, contracted and died from fever; as a widow ‘in advanced state of pregnancy’ with four children to care for, she appeals for assistance. It was through her husband’s responsibilities in the preparation of the ‘Richmond General Penitentiary [Dublin] for the reception of patients in Fever’, that he contracted the disease; memorial is signed by governors and physicians of House of Industry.
