Outlines that he was dismissed from position of Assistant Inspector of Dies and Plates, with the ‘Cancel Office’, of the Stamp Office, for he was accused of ‘given to a poor woman as waste paper some Cancelled Stamp’d Paper’; but as he received no pecuniary advantage and his conduct was and is ‘irreproachable and upright’ he appeals to be considered for employment again. |

In appeal to Peel, he promotes ‘the propriety of your modifying the Law so as to admit of landing and warehousing foreign Flour in Ireland for the purpose of its being exported’. Includes reply from Peel, Irish Office, London, stating that no parliamentary time was available to bring the matter forward, but as it stands the Lord Lieutenant has no ‘authority to sanction the Importation of Foreign Flour for the purpose of its being warehoused’. |

Declares that contentions on affidavit of Flanagan may be exaggerated but admits there is a suggestion of ‘great violation of the general Duty of the Gaoler’; in such circumstances, he recommends ‘the local inspector of the Gaol to examine into the facts’. Includes copy reply from Baker who claims that Flanagan’s charges are ‘so questionable a nature as not to admit of any interference on the part of Government’ but agrees that a local examination might be desirable. |

Petition of convicts in city of Cork depot, County Cork, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting that a daily allowance of tobacco be made available for consumption. Explains that due to depot regulations and being far removed from friends, inmates that are ‘in habit of smoaking [sic] tobacco’ are unable to purchase or procure the commodity locally. Because of unavailability of tobacco, it is contended that convicts are ‘afflicted with swelled gums, and other consequences are likely to follow that may tend to the injury of petitioners health’. |

Encloses reproduction of correspondence between Digby and McMahon with outline of claim by Digby to receive dues; having paid £4,650 on accession to the office, sale of the post to Thomas Fenton will realize £4,000 but this figure is subject to a £500 deduction towards public funds; as Digby asserts this in insufficient compensation, he remarks ‘I throw myself on your Candor and Generosity for a Waver of the Demand of £500, or at least for a very considerable abatement’. |

Encloses letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Cork, to Gregory, with information on escape attempt by Tipperary prisoners at Convict Depot, Cork, on water shortages and suggestion of placing convicts on board hospital ship in Cove harbour; Trevor encloses letter from Murphy on attempted prison break: ‘I take the liberty of sending you the three knives and two pieces of iron (part of the links of a chain bolt sent from Mayo) which were the only instruments I can discover to have been used in their attempt’. |
