Letter from William Cooke, [?Adruel, King's County], magistrate, to William Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, requesting part remission of fines imposed on John Simms and Owen Sheran for keeping unregistered arms. Conveys that he regards Simms as ‘Steady and Loyal and most useful to the Magistrates in giving information - that his son beat off a party of carders who attacked his House’. For such reasons, he asserts that the crown moiety be restored to him. Annotated on back in reply ‘as No part of the Penalty goes to the King, the Lord Lieutenant has not the power of remitting it’. |

Alleges that he is held in prison due to a claim of £22 made by Stephen Rice, his brother in law, and that he has a valid counter claim of £60, out of which he will allow the former claim, if released. Complains that Rice ‘wanting to Rob Petitioner of his Wife’s fortune and by all sorts of Oppression to Compell [sic] him to Compromise his Demand’. Annotated on back in response ‘that is a matter in which Government cannot interfere’. |

Provides names of prisoners including those of Susanna and Alicia Henderson, for ‘Picking Pockets’ and makes application ‘on account of the very crowded state of this gaol’ for removal to point of embarkation. Also includes letter from Dr Edward Trevor, Cove, County Cork, to Alexander Mangin, Dublin Castle, stating that it ‘would be improper to include the Cavan Convicts in the number to be embarked…as other Sheriffs would expect the same arrangement’; admits of congestion in the prison and recommends removal of convicts to Kilmainham, Dublin. |

Montgomery complains that despite favorable weather ‘they still remain in the Pigeon house dock’ and he is under orders from Sir Josias Rowley, Admiral, ‘to proceed to Cork with these vessels without delay’.
