Petition of Lieutenant Robert Belton, 10th Regiment of Foot, 71 Capel Street, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting consideration for government employment. States that he served under the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsula campaign, but being wounded in action, 10 Nov 1813, was placed on half pay; he appeals to the Chief Secretary to ‘grant him some civil or military appointment that would enable him to support his family and maintain the appearance which a British officer should make’. Encloses a letter of reference from Lieutenant Colonel John Oke, 61st Regiment of Foot, dated 22 September 1817. |

Letter from Lester Beddy, 35 Pill Lane, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, making protest about lack of response to previous applications for a post, he objects ‘for I have always been brought [up] to think it the greatest insult, not to answer when addressed either by letter or otherwise’. Encloses letter from Beddy to Gregory, dated two days later, asking that the Under Secretary employ his influence ‘to get me appointed a cadet in the honorable East India company’s service’. In support of application, he mentions John Townsend Sinnett and Alderman Mark Bloxham and that his father ‘served his King during the whole of the disturbance of ninety-eight with loyalty and fidelity’. |

Encloses memorial from Brown to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, outlining case for ‘some humble situation’; recites loss of means and loyalty of father, a Catholic, who made ‘steadfast and repeated refusals of becoming a united Irishman’ while at Terpoint, County Kilkenny, a response that ‘nearly depriving him and his Innocent Family of even their lives’; reply reproduced at end of memorial from Major General Sir Henry Torrens, Horse Guards, to say that ‘his Royal Highness [Duke of York] has no means of procuring for him any Employment’, dated 3 February 1818.
