Letter from Sir B Hallowell, Rear Admiral, His Majesty’s ship Tonnant, Cork harbour, County Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, reporting presence of a ‘Vigilantee [sic] of about 320 Tons burden armed with 16 guns, commanded by George Ross, bearing the flag of the Buenos ayres state’ anchored in Bearhaven harbour, Cork. States that the vessel has onboard merchandise taken from several Spanish ships and that Captain Scriven of the ship Erne is anchored nearby ‘to prevent any illicit traffic being carried on during her stay in that port’. Also includes letter from William Saurin, Attorney General, on subject of vessel at Bearhaven advising care on legal grounds without production of a ‘specific charge against her’, 30 August 1818. |
