SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Frederick Homan, Arden Wood, Kilcullen, barony of Uppercross, County Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, regarding various grievances affecting his neighborhood of Kilcullen, County Dublin. With reference to his locality, he complains that ‘the landholders here are subject to the same heavy cess as those in the immediate vicinity of the Capital’ but roads and bridges have been ‘totally neglected for the last 16 years’, a difficulty occasioned by the fact that ‘there is not one gentleman from this part of the country on the county Grand Jury’; states that at present no fewer than six parishes are ‘without a Church, a Clergyman or resident magistrate’; refers to local disorder and lawlessness and relates that ‘Two desperate outlaws, Edgeworth and Chance, were lately protected in Tipperkevin, and evaded the hands of justice for nearly 2 years plundering with their associates the surrounding locality, till our association was so fortunate as to surprise them in their retreat (a cave) and make them prisoners’; alludes also to local objections to enclosure order on common at Ballymore Eustace and refers to his part in formation of the first local association for the ’protection of the inhabitants’ of his neighborhood, composed of ‘300 gentlemen and farmers’ from counties Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow. |

Expresses thanks for reply to petition and conveys hope that the Lord Lieutenant, ‘will not forget my Claim, when the Lands belonging to the Crown, are to be disposed off [sic]’; warns that at present the lands are subject to theft and criminality but if ‘either Set or Sold, will greatly increase the Revenue and add security to the Country’. |

Petition of Maria Jackson, to Earl Charles Whitworth, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, alleging impoverished circumstances and requesting government relief. Refers to loyalty of brother William Sandys ‘who distinguished himself Considerably in the Rebellions of 1789 and 1803’ and of brother Simon Sandys who ‘was killed at Vinegar Hill when opposed to the Rebels in 1798’. Encloses letter from Jackson, Richmond Surgical Hospital, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, drawing attention to her previous application for relief and referring to her ‘total loss of health’. States she is ‘ready and willing to earn my Bread’ but ‘not having clothes’ she declares herself in need of assistance. Seeks to have a ‘trifle’ advanced to visit family in Loughrea, County Galway, and hopes for redress of dispute with father-in-law, over a farm which she claims entitlement to. Also includes short memorandum which states that Jackson ‘received three Guineas from the Charity Fund – but was told at the time, not to make any further application as it could not be attended to’. |
