Letter from John Galloway, secretary to Commissioners of Consolidated Fund, Board Room, 37 Sackville [O'Connell] Street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, stating that an application has been made for a sum of £6,000 to fund creation of a new road from Black Horse Lane to Blanchardstown, County Dublin, subject to provision of an Act of Parliament. Emphasises that the application has met with no opposition from the Post Office or other parties, and that it has the full support of the Commissioners as ‘a work of great Public utility’. Encloses petition from Commissioners of Navan Turnpike Road to Commissioners of Consolidated Fund, expressing disgust at state of road from Black Horse Lane, in city of Dublin to Navan, County Meath, and applying for a sum of £6,000 to complete work; claims that the toll road returns a rent of £2,200 per year, an income they intend to mortgage to meet interest payments and repay the principle owed; work should commence immediately, they assert ‘in consequence of the low price of Land and cheapness of labour, at the same time it would afford immediate relief to the poor of the neighborhood’. Letter from Augustus Frederick FitzGerald, 3rd Duke of Leinster, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, enclosing petition from parishioners of Rathangan and letter from minister, William Bourne, regarding court presentment for theft on boats moored on canal. Encloses petition of parishioners of Rathangan, County Kildare, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting relief from claim of damages of £1,658.8.1½ against the parish in Court of Common Pleas; provides detail of incident in March 1817 when ‘a Lawless and Tumultuous, Mob assembled at different times, in the Town and Parish of Rathangan and committed Depredations on three Boats, bound to Dublin, laden with Provisions’, an event that was followed by legal action by owners for recovery of property. Petitioners claim that the greater part of the mob came from outside the parish and, in present economic circumstances, are unable to pay the proposed fine; document is signed by minister, church wardens and parishioners. Includes letter from William Bourne, minister of parish of Rathangan, to Duke of Leinster, stating that two writs have been placed on parish for payment of claims, one for £400 has been met with ‘great difficulty’, but they are unable to pay the second of £1,258.8.1½; urges government assistance, which might take the form of a loan, ‘the Defendants in each cause giving their security for the repayment of the money so advanced’. |
