Letter from Commissioners of Lunatic Asylums, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, offering information on provision of lunatic asylums throughout Ireland, in accordance with an act created for that purpose. Refers to paper on subject, plans by architects, Francis Johnston and James Bevan, and report by Johnston on viability of converting existing barracks into lunatic asylums [not included]. As to a design for the proposed buildings, they emphasise ‘We consider the Plan for 100 Patients by Mr Johnston, mark’d No 2, as a good One’ being ‘devoid of all unnecessary decorations’, which, with some modification, would be acceptable to the Commissioners.

File of material relating to design, cost and implementation of providing lunatic asylums in Ireland. Contains letter from architect, James Bevans, London, to the Commissioners for superintending Pauper Lunatic Asylums in Ireland, enclosing estimates for buildings to accommodate one hundred and fifty patients respectively [not extant]. Also includes three letters on matters connected with proposed institutions by architect, Francis Johnston, Eccles Street, Dublin, to Commissioners: having submitted two plans for the project, Johnston remarks ‘I have made no part of the Buildings more than two floors high, a great part only one, which will contribute much to wholesome ventilation’; also includes outline of districts of Ireland in which it is proposed to erect lunatic asylums; plus table of estimated costs of asylums in Ireland prepared in conjunction with plans by Johnston. Plans submitted to Dr George Renny.
