Letter from Reverend Forster Archer, Inspector General of Prisons Office, 78 Camden Street, Dublin, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, responding to a memorial for relief from prisoners confined in the gaol of Limerick. Discusses food allowances given in gaol and reports reluctance of Grant Jury to increase amount allocated due to ‘the smallness of their funds’; compared to allowance of foodstuff in the jails of Clare and Kerry, he regards the Limerick allocation as ‘insufficient’ and declares intention to ‘endeavor to convince the G[rand] Jury of the inadequacy of the Allowance’; states prison inspector’s unwillingness to distribution new clothing amongst prisoners confined in Limerick prior to departure because they would likely ‘pawn or destroy’ the items. Encloses petition from the Criminal Prisoners confined in the Gaol of the City and County of Limerick to Gregory, requesting relief from want of food and clothing; they add as a postscript that ‘Poor Distressed Pet[itioner]s apprehend that Hunger and misery will Oblige them to have Recourse to Illegal proceedings at the risk of their Lives and the Lives of others’. |
