Letter from Anna Black, Rathfriland, County Down, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, making request for payment of sum due to her by the War Office. Letter has transcription of communication from Lord Palmerston, War Office, dated 31 August 1818, which states ‘His Royal Highness [Prince Regent] has been graciously pleased, in the name and on the behalf of His Majesty, to grant you a Pension of Twenty Pounds a year, being the rate allowed for the Widow of a Major…as you reside in Ireland the necessary communication will be made to the Lord Lieutenant to enable you to receive the said Pension in that Country’. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from William Brown, Tipper, near Naas, County Kildare, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, to enquire about progress of application for government employment. Refers to earlier letter addressed to Robert Peel ‘stating Grievances that my Father and family had sustained during the late troubles [1798 Rebellion] in Ireland and his having saved the life of a Soldier of the County Dublin Militia’, and mentions subsequent investigation of his case by Major Wills; having had no communication on the matter, Brown requests the intervention of Chief Secretary on his behalf. Also mentions that Alexander Mangin, Dublin Castle, made enquiry of the Board of Inland Navigation, but found no vacancy available for Brown. Petitioner adds as postscript that information on his character may be obtained from the earls of Carrick and Mayo. |

Letter from Reverend John C Talbot, Private Secretary to Earl Talbot, Phoenix Park, Dublin, to Alexander Mangin, Dublin Castle, on subject of application of Miss AD Browne for relief. As to her appeal for assistance, he relates that Earl Talbot ‘Refused once; and has again been attacked very strenuously’; having heard that Mangin described her as ‘a person of very bad character’, he pleads that additional information about her is made available to him. ‘By the style of her letters’ the writer concludes, ‘I should not imagine she is very deserving’. |

Petition of John Baynham, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment to post. Explains that as ‘youngest of Eight children’ he finds himself in a ‘deplorable situation’ being ‘totally dependent on his brother since the death of his father who filled the office of underkeeper in the Phoenix Park for thirty five years’. Recollects that a promise was given him from Lord Charles Whitworth, Lord Lieutenant, that his ‘name should be placed first on the list of Candidates for the Office of Stamper dated 28 February 1814’. In the light of his need for employment, he urges Peel to advance his case before Lord Talbot. |

Petition of Henry Beeles, Glasnevin, County Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting appointment to government post. Unable to support his family of seven on income of parish clerk, and being ‘in very great distress’, he implores that Peel would ‘condescend to recommend’ him for any available post. Encloses letter from Beeles, to Peel, in which he recollects that a promise of a post for him was communicated to Lord March and the Duchess of Richmond; with draft reply on back from Sidney Streatfeild [Private Secretary to Chief Secretary of Ireland] at request of Peel, to state ‘it will be very difficult to provide you with any public employment, as there are so few for which, in consequence of your age, you are eligible‘. Also includes letter from Streatfeild, Irish Office, London, England, dated 1 April 1816, in which he admits the case ‘puzzled me a good deal’ for an entry in Peel’s application book states Beeles ‘was appointed a Clerk in the Stamp Office’, in view of which, further information is requested. |

Petition of Daniel Beere, Deputy Pursuivant of the Court of the Exchequer, Pursuivant’s Office, King’s Inn Quay, Dublin, to William Peel, with request to be promoted to post of Pursuivant, now vacated owing to death of Robert O’Hara. Draft reply from Peel on back to state ‘it is not in my power to give any assurances with respect to the appointment of Pursuivant of the Court of the Exchequer as I have had no opportunity of considering the subject nor in fact of communicating with the Lord Lieutenant upon it’. Encloses letter from Beere to Peel with copy of memorial addressed to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, in which petitioner asserts he ‘has filled the office of Deputy Pursuivant for near Forty years’ and requests that his ‘long service, advanced period of life, and numerous Family, will be taken into consideration’. |
