File of papers relating to investigation of George Reeves and William Dineford from England, who are accused of defrauding pensioners of cash on pretence of winning prize money. Includes three letter from A Meadows, mayor of Wexford, County Wexford, detailing investigations of the two men allegedly involved in the swindle in the counties of Wexford, Waterford and Cork. Includes three letter from Reverend HT Vaughan, Church of Ireland curate of Enniscorthy, County Wexford, reporting on activities of Reeves and Dineford and to inquire whether they have authority to receive contributions for prize money; also reply from Dublin Castle to say that information has been received to effect that ‘Reeves is the discharged Clerk of a Jew in London, and that he is not authorized to receive the orders’ for prize money, 1 July 1818; also letter from Messrs Chartres and Bourne, Gloucester Street, Dublin, with report on character of Reeves whom he states ‘applied when in Dublin to Colonel Warren of the 27th Regiment soliciting the business of the Regiment and stating that he was sent over by Government for the purpose of arranging all such Claims’ for prize money. |
