3 letters from John Smith, Paris, France, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, recommending appointment of Alexander McCaul to post of gauger. In support of appeal Smith cites that ‘my late father raised and clothed at his own expense in 1798, when Ireland was in a most disturbed state, a very useful Corps of his own Tenantry. Owing to his good sense and influence, the latter of which he possessed from always living amongst them, there was not a United Irishman for miles round him’. Also includes two copy letters in reply from Peel indicating that little prospect of employment presently exists due to the number of applicants awaiting a situation. |

File of papers relating to returns made by judges with details of individuals qualified to serve in office of High Sheriffs in counties throughout Ireland, for year 1818. Returns were transmitted to Dublin Castle, by [Thomas Manners] Sutton, Lord Chancellor, Stephen’s Green, Dublin, who remarks that the persons nominated were subject to the scrutiny of the senior judges and that ‘the names have been selected with the greatest impartiality’, 13 November 1817. Includes various letters received from nominees, some to accept office of High Sheriff, though mainly declining for financial, health, or family reasons, or because of non-residence in Ireland: includes letter from Arthur Loftus, Rathangan, County Kildare, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, expressing surprise at his nomination to post of High Sheriff for Kildare, for, he states ‘I have not a single acre of estated property or the means to enable me to support the necessary expenses attending that office’, 4 December 1817; returns include, in most cases, three nominees for each Irish county, drawn from the local landed classes, for example, those selected for County Dublin are Eyre Coote of Leopardstown, John Staunton Rochfort of the Wards, and Richard Verschoyle of Mount Merrion. |
