Petition of magistrates, landed gentlemen, merchants, traders, and inhabitants of Wexford town, County Wexford, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, protesting against grant for daily market in town of Wexford. Outlines opposition to the measure, which has the support of the under Sheriff: they state that the establishment of daily markets is ‘perfectly unnecessary, there being at present two market days in each week…fully adequate to the wants of the Publick’; petition is signed by 127 individuals. Also includes affidavit of James Barry, who was called to appear in a court of enquiry into effects of granting a patent for daily market in Wexford, but submission was disallowed by the sheriff; Barry argues ‘that opening daily markets would cause the appearance of Scarcity, as no general supply in such case would appear at market, and thereby have the effect of Rising the price of all kinds of Provisions, to the manifest injury of the poorer classes of society’; also statement by Richard Madock, explaining that the proposed patent would be detrimental to his trade as butter maker; also affidavits from Walter Jones and Walter Sinott, complaining of potential injury to trade, and short memorandum compiled at Dublin Castle on same. |
