SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Richard Wilcocks, Palmerston, County Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting post of employment for his son. States that he joined a Dublin branch of yeomanry force in 1796 in which he 'served during the entire of the Rebellion of 1798, sometimes at great personal risk, having had my horse shot under me in a Skirmish with a rebel party’; after this he took up position as a magistrate in Palmerston area, and ‘kept that neighbourhood quiet until Emmet’s Insurrection broke out in the City of Dublin in 1803’: also claims that he ‘was the person who gave Mr Marsden the first authentic information respecting that conspiracy’. Includes reply from Peel, indicating that as he is about to move from his present post in government, little hope can be entertained of offering a post of employment for his son; acknowledges contribution of Wilcocks, who ‘by a happy combination of firmness and moderation’ contributed to stability in those Irish districts in which he served.

Letter from William Gore, John Trench and Edward Glascock, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, indicating that Dominick Daly, distributor of stamps in County Galway, is suspended for ‘he remains indebted to the crown in the sum of Six hundred and sixty pounds’, a debt that will be subject to recovery action. Also includes copy letter from Peel wishing to obtain an accurate assessment of Daly’s position as he has received a petition from same complaining of money owed by Owen Kelly, sub-distributor of stamps for Tuam, and requesting time to pay the arrears; also later copy letter from Peel stating Lord Lieutenant’s view that Daly shall be given until 15 March to make good outstanding dues to crown, otherwise a replacement will be appointed.

Letter from William Gore, John Trench and Edward Glascock, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, acknowledging receipt of petition of Dominick Daly, distributor of stamps in county Galway, and to state opinion that Daly should be allowed a further period of time to receive arrears owed by Owen Kelly, sub-distributor of stamps for Tuam, before they resort to legal proceeding against Daly for recovery of stamp money owed to the crown. Also includes memorial of Daly, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, alleging that his indebtedness to the crown is due to the financial embarrassment of Kelly, but claims that he will be in a position to settle arrears, for Kelly ‘is to receive a large sum of money in the next Term’.
