Indicate opinion that Gaffney’s request for recompense should not be met with approval. Encloses memorial of Gaffney to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, outlining case for moiety in recognition of his efforts to legally enforce payment of stamp duties on Thomas Southern, Clondarrigmoile, Queen’s County and Edward Dunne, Pallas, Queen’s County.

Letter from William Gore, Thomas Burton Fitzgerald and Edward Glascock, Commissioners of Stamps, Stamp Office, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting opinion of Attorney General on Mr Wheeler, Lottery Office Keeper, Dublin, who is charged with having insured illegally. They convey that proceedings taken against Wheeler before a magistrate, ‘were utterly void, and that an information for the penalties incurred, should be filed against Mr Wheeler, but that to support such information, it would be necessary to have the attendance, as witnesses, of the Persons who informed before the Magistrates; also that we cannot withdraw Mr Wheeler’s License or refuse him another’.

Petition of Dominick Daly, distributor of stamps for County Galway, 10 Stafford [Wolfe Tone] Street, Dublin, to Robert Peel, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, requesting additional time to settle account with the Stamp Office, a previous bill for that purpose having failed. Also includes letter from Malachy Daly, son of Dominick, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, acknowledging inaccuracy of statement respecting full payment of arrears due by father, noting rather that the outstanding amount owed ‘has been reduced to about £300’; also memorial from Dominick Daly to Grant stating that arrears have been paid and that he was ‘led into the impropriety which has occurred’; also includes statement of explanation from Malachy Daly, on behalf of father, conveying details of source of financial difficulties that relate to an over extension of stamp credit to Owen Kelly, sub-distributor of stamps for Tuam, by Mr Irwin, contrary to a verbal agreement to enforce a limitation; also includes communication from Commissioners of Stamp Duties to Dublin Castle on the matter which has been crossed out in pencil.
