Letter from Thomas Gibson, 63 Capel Street, Dublin, upholsterer and cabinet maker, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, seeking appointment to the post of cabinet maker to the Board of Works. States that Francis Johnston, Board of Works architect, will give a favourable recommendation of his work. Emphasises that he has erected 'all the mahogany work of the Bank of Ireland under Mr Johnston's directions', 7 January 1819. Annotation by Grant asks 'Is such a place in existence, or vacant?'. Encloses letter from Reverend Alexander Fraser, minister of Inverness, Scotland, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, introducing and recommending Gibson, a native of Inverness, and now a 'Respectable Inhabitant in Dublin', 20 November 1818. Also note by staff of Chief Secretary's Office, recording that 'AM [probably Alexander Mangin, chief clerk, Chief Secretary's' Office] saw Johnston', and reporting Johnston's opinion on the matter. |

Describes the misery and distress resulting from the activity of pirates in the bay, who have 'usurped' control of the bay from its rightful owners, and prevented lawful fishing there. Urges government to act to protect Irish fisheries, and suggest necessity of an armed vessel stationed in the bay. Petition signed by 19 inhabitants. |

Reports on a misrepresentation of facts made to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, in a previous petition from the inhabitants of Tullamore. Emphasises that original meeting at Clara was by far the best attended, not that in Tullamore. Urges that a quarter sessions held in Clara would be of great benefit to county, but one at Tullamore would be a 'useless expense'. |
