Letter from James Daly, Dunsandle, County Galway, MP for County Galway, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a petition from the inhabitants and traders of Galway, and urging government to adopt the measures suggested in it, 7 October 1819. Annotation of draft reply by Grant on reverse. Encloses petition of inhabitants merchants, and traders of town and county of Galway, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, requesting the 'exclusive' and 'permanent' stationing of a revenue ship in Galway Bay for the protection of Irish fishing from piracy. Refers to earlier petition of November 1818 making similar request. Emphasises outrages against fishermen in area, by those whose 'intention is to limit the quantity of fish brought to Market, thereby to enhance the price; and Monopolize the fishery'. Signed by 61 names, 2 October 1819. Also earlier letter from Arthur French St. George, Tyrone, Oranmore, County Galway, to Grant, 16 February 1819, enclosing a petition from the gentlemen and farmers of his neighbourhood [petition not present, but presumably relating to similar subject as above], with annotation by William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the dispatch of a revenue cruizer to Galway Bay for the protection of those employed in the fisheries. |

File of papers relating to the report of [Reverend Forster Archer], Inspector General of Prisons Ireland, to parliament, relating to the bridewell in Galway town, and possible investigations into events there. Includes copy of letter from William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, to Thomas and William Kemmis, crown solicitors, requesting that they lay the case of the actions of a Galway magistrate, Edward Blake, who confined several women in Galway bridewell without written committals, before the Attorney General, 31 July 1818. Encloses relevant extract from the report of the Inspector General of Prisons to parliament, referring to the 'oppressive and irregular practices that had been committed' at Galway bridewell and the 'spectacle of cruel oppression' found there, 21 June 1818. Also newspaper extract from the 'Caledonian Mercury', Edinburgh, of 21 October 1819, reporting the case of the women held in Galway bridewell. Also memorandum from Inspector General of Prisons Office to Alexander Mangin, chief clerk in civil department, Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, stating that the Attorney General did not consider it necessary to take further action in the case, as the bridewell has been abolished and its prisoners freed. |

Emphasises their support of these small licensed distillers, who have been a valuable buyer of excess stocks of grain. Urges government not to countenance the complaints of 'monopolists' who wish to see small stills suppressed. Signed by 20 names. |

Also requesting investigation into Redmond Joyce O'Donovan, operating as a pawnbroker; requests an answer to be sent to James O'Hara junior, recorder of Galway, 17 November 1819. Encloses copy of resolution of sheriffs and commons [the lower house of Dublin Corporation] requesting a copy of the bill so they may, 'duly consider the propriety of a measure that must lay a very heavy additional expense on the citizens'. File of papers relating to returns to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, of the composition of grand juries of towns and counties of Ireland. Includes certified lists, and copies of certified lists, of individuals composing each grand jury panel at sessions of spring and summer assizes in 1819. Originals usually signed by clerk of crown or high sheriff for particular town or county. Lists provide full names of each individual and, in some cases, also place of residence. Returns and copies of returns for composition of grand juries in 1819 for: County Antrim; County Armagh; County Carlow; County Cavan; County Clare; County Donegal; County Down; Drogheda town; County Dublin; Dublin city; County Fermanagh; County Galway; Galway town; County Kerry; County Kildare; County Kilkenny; Kilkenny city; King's County [County Offaly]; County Leitrim; Limerick County; Limerick city; county and city of Londonderry; County Longford; County Louth; County Mayo; County Meath; County Monaghan; Queen's County [County Laois]; County Roscommon; County Sligo; County Tipperary; County Tyrone; County Waterford; Waterford city; County Westmeath; County Wexford; and County Wicklow.
