Refers to his previous letter on subject which emphasised bad state of bedding throughout the prison which was contributing to spread of dysentery. States that since then, the dysentery has grown much worse and become fatal, and he emphasises the urgent need for additional bedding.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

4 letters from Dr Robert Harding, Cork, County Cork, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning his remuneration for his medical attendance at Cork convict depot. Having received news from Dr Edward Trevor, medical superintendent of convicts, of the amount he is to receive, he queries both the amount and the commencement of the payment. Believes he should be remunerated from July 1816 when he first attended the convicts, 21 January 1821. The subsequent letters continue to express his grievances on the subject. In reply to a letter of Gregory's Harding rejects 'misrepresentations made against me', stating, 'it is not for me to state what neglect took place, or to whom it is to be attributed - What I have to contend for is, that the responsibleness [sic] that rested with me I faithfully discharged…', 8 March 1819. Includes notes on the subject by Dublin Castle official, in which it is noted that 'Dr Harding is self appointed to the attendance of the Depot'.

Refers to concerns of Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, that 'so little attention was paid to the health and comfort of the prisoners'. Attributes mortality rate at depot to virulence of [fever] epidemic and complains at lack of clean mattresses and bedding in depot, 25 February 1819. States that he 'did not deserve the severe censures conveyed to me' in Gregory's recent letter, and defends his conduct, 27 February 1819. Response of Gregory to matter recorded in annotation on reverse.
