TITLE: |
Letter from Emilia Hamilton, Dublin, requesting appointment of her husband to post of examiner of surveyors' and gaugers' books |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from Emilia Hamilton, Annadale Cottage, Philipsburgh Avenue, Dublin, to Countess Talbot [wife of Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant], Dublin, requesting that her husband, James Hamilton, be considered for appointment to post of examiner of surveyors' and gaugers' books, 1 June 1819. Encloses several newspaper cuttings in praise of Hamilton's character, and specifically, absolving him of a charge made against him of 'being connected with Orange Societies'. Testimonies emphasise that Hamilton is a 'sincere' and 'liberal minded Catholic', 22 February 1818 - 11 January 1819. Also petition of Joseph Hamilton, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, requesting appointment to above post, following death of Walter Neville Byrne, 2 June 1819. Selection of identical newspaper cuttings attached to petition, vouching for Hamilton's character as a 'consistent patriot'. |

Letter from Reverend George Hay, Londonderry, County Londonderry, senior Presbyterian minister of Londonderry congregation, to Alexander Mangin, chief clerk in civil department, Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, concerning procedures for approval of new appointments to ministries in Presbyterian church.
