File of papers relating to case of the Fountain family, Dublin, affected by fever epidemic. Includes petition of Arthur Robinson, 3 Beaver Street, Dublin, scale officer at custom house, Dublin, on behalf of Ann Fountain and family, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, requesting that the eldest son of late John Fountain, a scale officer in custom house, be appointed in his place. Describes death of Fountain from typhus fever, leaving a wife and 8 children destitute. States that his wife is now 'laying in the fever in the same Bed with his remains and is not expected to recover', 8 June 1819. Also medical report from Dr John Peebles, medical inspector, reporting on his visit to the Fountain home at 26 Phibsborough, Dublin. States that Ann Fountain, who is heavily pregnant, and one of the children suffering from fever, have been moved to Talbot hospital, noting that 'Seven children remain at home without means of support'. Annotation on reverse by 'T' [Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant] expressing his 'horror' at this case, adding 'I hope some relief must be found for these poor Creatures'. |

SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Letter from William Abbott, first clerk to House of Industry, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning decline in fever epidemic, government funds to deal with the disease, and the Talbot fever hospital. Notes that fever has 'considerably declined in this City, And as from the reports of the Physician they are informed it is also diminished in the Country'. Suggests that some medical staff, including the temporary physicians, are no longer required at the Richmond General Penitentiary, 5 April 1819. Encloses return detailing medical attendants appointed to treat fever patients in Richmond penitentiary, October 1817 - 28 July 1818. List provides names, and dates of each appointment. Also information on numbers of fever patients in Hardwicke and Whitworth hospitals, and the Richmond general penitentiary as of 28 March 1819. Return signed by Abbott, 2 April 1819. |

File of papers relating to requests of Archibald MacDougall, Belfast, for appointment to one of new posts of commissioner of fisheries. Also MacDougall's suggestion that government grant a bounty for seals caught off Irish coast, owing to value of their oil and skins, 30 June 1819. Includes letter from MacDougall to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, and Irish Office, London, reiterating his application for employment in fisheries and describing losses incurred in the publishing of his 'works of improvement', commenting that 'the people here, in general, have no taste for works of improvement...their brains are turned with politics and reading of vile trash Novels, Fables and imaginary Romances, together with other immoral and impious works..'. Also complains of rumours he has heard that 'two young petty grovelling Herring sellers' are being considered for inspector of fisheries posts, 30 December 1819. Encloses copy of printed prospectus for establishing a Belfast and Carrickfergus Fishing Company, printed by Francis D Finlay, Belfast, 24 December 1819. |
