File of papers relating to the government's practice of requesting military escorts and guards for convicts and convict ships. Includes letter from Sir George Beckwith, Commander of the Forces, Royal Hospital, Kilmainham, Dublin, to Sir Edward Baker Baker, military under secretary, Dublin Castle, confirming that an escort was arranged for the removal of a female convict and 2 male convicts from Castlebar, County Mayo, to Cork. But requests that in future, government inform them of the exact route to be used to move the prisoners, 20 February 1819. Also letter from Beckwith, Royal Hospital, Dublin, to Baker, confirming that he received the government's request to provide a military guard for the 'James and Mary' convict ship, and that the order was carried out. Returns the letters he received along with the request, but asks that in future, at least 24 hours notice be given when military assistance is needed by government, 26 February 1819. |

Letter from Thomas Boyse, The Grange, Bannow, County Wexford, magistrate for County Wexford, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the distress of the poor in the union of Bannow, owing to the large population and a lack of employment. The moor of Bannow, 'formerly a common, is almost I may say covered with Cabins, inhabited by Paupers'. Adds a 'P.S.' inquiring whether government would assist any Irishmen in emigrating to north America. Encloses petition of the inhabitants of the union of Bannow and Kilkevan, County Wexford, to Lord Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, highlighting the distress of the poor following the recent failure of the potato crop, and requesting government relief. Notes that the situation is exacerbated by the fact that all the landed proprietors in the area, except one - Samuel Boyse, his father - are absentee. Petition signed by 14 names. |
