File of papers relating to the powers of the Board of Health for Newry, County Down. Includes letter from Charles Campbell and William Needham Thompson, Newry, County Down, magistrates for County Down, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a certificate signed by Campbell and Thompson. States that as the fever is now so much reduced in Newry town and its vicinity, the Board of Health no longer requires its powers, 15 March 1819. Also letter from Trevor Corry, also magistrate for County Down, and Thompson, Newry, to William Gregory, enclosing a certificate signed by Corry and Thompson stating the same, 17 March 1819.

Letter from Sergeant Henry Joy, Temple Street, Dublin, first sergeant of King's Counsel, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, reiterating his earlier recommendation for Dr James Drummond, Chichester Street, Belfast, to be appointed physician to new lunatic asylum, proposed by government to be established in Belfast. Notes that Drummond has previously been physician in fever hospital in the north, and encloses 4 testimonials in support of his character and work. Includes testimonial signed by several doctors, including William Haliday, 19 April 1819. Also testimonial signed by members of the committee of fever hospital for parish of Holywood, County Down, emphasising Drummond's work, with the parish now 'entirely freed…from the effects of that dreadful malady. Signed by members of committee and magistrates of County Down, 21 April 1819. Letter from Crofton FitzGerald, first clerk to House of Industry, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning supplies for convicts. Reports, as requested, that 350 suits of clothing and other items for convicts about to sail for New South Wales, are ready to be delivered. Requests advice on Dr Edward Trevor's order to send the clothing to Cork, at the governors' own risk. Also note by Dublin Castle official in response, urging items to be sent and stating that 'there can be no risk in sending clothing to Cork'.

Letter from Alderman Frederick Darley and Richard Guinness, police magistrates, head office police, Dublin, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, reporting their opinion, as requested, to the request of the governors of the House of Industry, Dublin, to solve overcrowding at the adult female penitentiary in Smithfield, Dublin, by moving some prisoners to Newgate prison or the house of correction on Circular Road, Dublin. Having consulted with the recorder of Dublin, they propose to move the 'seven women who lately excited mutiny in the Prison to Newgate, and not to send anymore to Smithfield', 30 July 1819. Returns original letter from governors of house of industry to Gregory, making the proposal, 23 July 1819.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Francis Johnston, Eccles Street, Dublin, architect to Board of Works, to governors of house of industry, Dublin, reporting his opinion on work required on roof and guttering of building proposed for use as new fever hospital in James Street, Dublin. States that much of lead guttering has been stolen, and thus requires work, but suggests repairs to avoid expense of new replacement gutters. Also provides estimate for total cost of work, 1 February 1819. Also estimate of Edward Murray, builder, for 'sundry alterations' to be carried out in fever hospital, James Street, Dublin, including plastering walls, painting, and internal joinery work, 25 January 1819. Having been referred to Johnston, he has made various corrections to estimate (indicated in red ink), signed by Johnston, 28 January 1819.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers relating to investigations carried out into cases of Edward King and John Hyland, Irish paupers and their families, living in Manchester, who were sent back to Ireland by the authorities in England, and who have made various claims in a request for relief to the lord mayor of Dublin. Includes copy of letter from J Norris, magistrate, Manchester, England, to Henry Hobhouse, Under Secretary of State for the Home Department, London, sending various documents in relation to the cases, for the information of Henry Addington, 1st viscount Sidmouth, Secretary of State. States that King and Hyland 'are men of bad character', 21 July 1819. Encloses report on each case, signed by J Norris, magistrate; James Reilly, church warden of Manchester; and John Bellion, overseer, Manchester, 20 July 1819. In both cases, the officials in Manchester contradict various claims made by King and Hyland concerning their treatment. Also copy of warrant sending Rossanah Hyland and her 3 children to Liverpool, to sail for Ireland, 10 June 1819. Also warrant sending Edward King, his wife Bridget and 3 children to Liverpool, to sail for Ireland, 27 May 1819.
