Letter from David Lane and Company, Cork, brewers, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning the decline of their brewing trade and protesting at additional tax to be levied on malt from January 1820. Recounts decline in consumption of malt liquor in recent years, and how brewing has suffered against Irish distillation, which is to remain unaffected by new tax. File of papers relating to amendments proposed to be made to legislation concerning issue of money from the consolidated fund. Includes letter from John Galloway, Dublin, secretary to commissioners for the issue of money out of the consolidated fund, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing copy of draft of 'An Act to amend 2 acts made in the 57th year of His present majesty's reign for authorizing the issue of Exchequer Bills and the advance of money for carrying on Public Works and Fisheries and employment of the Poor, and also to amend an Act made in the 58th year of His present Majesty's reign, which said last mentioned act was made, to amend said two former acts, and to extend the powers of the Commissioners for carrying the said acts into Execution in Ireland, And further to amend the said several Acts, and further to extend the powers of the Commissioners in Ireland'. Cossart states that the draft bill has been approved by William Saurin, Attorney General for Ireland and requests that it be passed to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, to be presented in parliament, 21 April, 1819. Also printed copy of act of parliament 57 Geo III c.124, 'An act to amend an Act made in the present Session of Parliament, for authorizing the Issue of Exchequer Bills, and the Advance of Money for carrying on Public Works and Fisheries, and Employment of the Poor', 11 July 1817. Also letter from Henry Blake, Renvyle, Westport, County Mayo, to Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, requesting government loan of £1000 to complete section of road to Galway, where he intends to establish a new colony to attract English settlers, in preference of emigration to America, 1 April 1819. |
