Includes letter from William Parnell, MP for County Wicklow, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing petition of inhabitants of town and vicinity of Wicklow, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, and noting that their request is 'extremely desirable', 27 February 1819. Enclosed petition requests construction of a pier on north side of Wicklow harbour, emphasising the dangerous state of current harbour entrance, and its detrimental effect on trade and fisheries. Presents details on the nature and amount of imports and exports at harbour, and the benefits to be gained from a safe harbour at Wicklow, including improvement in export of materials from copper and lead mines in the county, February 1819. Signed by 151 inhabitants. Encloses accompanying information in support of petition, including list of accidents at Wicklow harbour, and list of names of fishermen drowned near Wicklow, up to January 1819. Also includes copy of letter from Sir Thomas Hyde Page, military engineer, to Gregory, reporting on his inspection of Wicklow harbour, and recommending construction of a pier, 30 December 1800. |
