Letter from William Perceval, Mullinavat, County Kilkenny, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing statement of expenditure of the government grant for the relief of the poor in parish of Kilbeacon, County Kilkenny, and also numbers and names of individuals employed in the parish, and the numbers in each family, July 1817- September 1817. Also information on diet of poor of parish. Perceval emphasises importance of his efforts to find them employment, 'they were all well industrious and well inclined People & of such an independent spirit that if I had not adopted the mode of giving employment… many of them would have almost starved sooner than have taken it as a charity'.

Letter from Richard Palmer, proprietor of Dublin Gas Company, requesting inclusion of clause in gas supply legislation

SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Richard Palmer, 7 French [Mercer] Street, Dublin, a proprietor of Dublin gas company, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing copy of a clause which the gas proprietors wish to be inserted into the gas bill. Clause would give gas company the right to open up public streets for conveyance of gas supplies. States such a clause is necessary to protect the rights of the gas company, otherwise their work is at the mercy of the commissioners of paving, 1 November 1819. Also letter from Palmer to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, stating that the gas company wishes to operate in similar way to other gas companies in towns and cities across England and Scotland, in providing light to private establishments, 25 November 1819.

Contains 175 questions relating to all aspects of prison and prisoner life. Also letter from Henry Comerford, convict, recently a prisoner in a Dublin jail, now onboard the ship 'Bencoolen', at Cobh, Cork, to Robert White, high sheriff of city of Dublin, requesting that he forward the enclosed letter to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary. Enclosed letter of Comerford, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, refers to prison abuses, and presents a detailed picture of the situation he witnessed as a prisoner in one particular Dublin prison, warning that 'it is too much the Interest of every Person connected with its management to keep you from the real state of things least [sic] they might lose their valuable Employments', April 1819.

SCOPE & CONTENT:

File of papers relating to claims of Thomas Knox, 2nd viscount Northland, and Lord Robert Seymour, for compensation, should they be deprived of their fees as chief prothonotaries of the Court of King's Bench and Court of Common Pleas, following the reports of the Irish commissioners of inquiry, and the suggested reforms of fees of offices in the Irish law courts. They urge that the proposed parliamentary bill on the subject should include compensation for each of them. Includes letters from Northland and Seymour to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, in support of their claims, 13 March 1819-July 1820, and enclosing evidence compiled by them relating to their case. Evidence includes extracts from reports of the commissioners of inquiry; extracts from relevant parliamentary bills and reports; details of precedents for such compensation to be granted; and copies of returns of fees from the Prothonotary of King's Bench. Also includes printed pamphlet entitled 'Case of the Right Honourable Lord Henry Seymour, and the Right Honourable Lord Robert Seymour, Chief Prothonotaries of the Court of King's Bench; and of the Honourable Vesey Knox, Chief Prothonotaries of the Court of Common Pleas, in Ireland', London, 1818.
