SCOPE & CONTENT:

Letter from Capt Bartholomew Warburton, police magistrate, Ballinasloe, [County Galway], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, remarking on the disturbed state of the neighbourhood of Portumna and of the strong imposition of the Terry Alt system there; noting that all farm labour in the countryside has been curtailed by the insurgents and observing that Mr Featherstone has ‘a quantity of Hay absolutely rotting for want of persons to get it made’; indicating a story was put about that Rev John Armstrong, rector of Purtumna, had accepted the terms of the Terry Alts and had provided them with ‘Beer and Porter to drink’. Enclosing letter from Armstrong denying that he has capitulated to the rule of the lawless; stating that his servants have expressed fears at continuing in his employment but turned out to help in hay making; adding he rewarded them with some funds to buy some beer but forbade the setting of a bonfire.

Letter from Capt Bartholomew Warburton, police magistrate, Ballinasloe, [County Galway], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, stating he met an attorney named Cowan in Eyrescourt and was somewhat surprised to learn of that the person who had shot the policemen at Dalystown was known and authority was given to have him arrested; expressing his reservation on the handling of the case in hand. Also letter from Warburton to Gosset, discussing the existence of some confidential information against a man called Brady, who has been identified by 14 persons; expressing his hope that the man in question will be exposed. Also enclosing letter from James S Ireland, Chief Constable, Loughrea, stating he has knowledge a man called Eagan of Hearnsebrooke, who is a ‘kind of secretary to the deluded people’; extending his analysis of Eagan, a clandestine and resourceful character who assisted in the acquittal of certain persons charged with production of illicit spirits; adding he is informed by [Joseph] Cowan that the man responsible for the murder of Campbell will be discovered; also noting in a postscript that he is suspicious of a former herdsman of Mr Kilkelly who apparently holds a house for some time past ‘by force’.

Includes letter from Warburton to Gosset, alluding to a threatening Rockite notice served on a gentleman of the town of Ballinasloe ‘evidently written by a person above the lower orders’: notice is headed ‘Extracts from our Cabinet’ and is directed against Peter Larkin demanding he quit the country and give up his work, on pain of a ‘sudden death’. Also includes letter from Warburton to Gosset, detailing an attack on Eyre Seymour near the town of Eyrescourt by an armed party; affirming that a couple of policemen will be stationed in that individual’s private dwelling to give protection. Letter from [Maj] George Warburton, Inspector General of Police [in Connaught], Ballinasloe, [County Galway], to Lieutenant Colonel Sir William Gosset, Under Secretary, commenting upon his meeting with Maj Gen Sir Thomas Arbuthnot [assistant adjutant general] and expressing a hope that their plans will smother the ill designs of the disaffected in the region; noting that a strong antipathy towards [Mathew] Singleton [Chief Magistrate of police, Woodford] is apparent, especially amongst the magistrates; adding he ‘has not been judicious in his proceedings’ with the police and military and suggesting he might be removed elsewhere if opportunity presents.
