File of papers relating to the Incorporated Society and the proposed reduction of funds for the protestant charter schools in Ireland. Includes: letter from Thomas Stuart, Registrar, Incorporated Society’s House, 55 Aungier Street, [Dublin], to William Lamb, Chief Secretary, informing him that in the absence of Rev Caesar Otway, secretary, he has laid his letter of 22 September 1827 before the board; letter from Otway to Lamb, forwarding copy of resolution passed at a meeting of the society on 25 September 1827, to transmit the enclosed memorial to [Richard Wellesley], Lord Lieutenant, appealing a recent government directive which stated that the grant for the schools would not exceed £12000 in 1828, £6000 in 1829, and be discontinued from 1830, and stating that they cannot reduce the numbers of children in their care; letter from Otway to Lamb, referring to enclosed copy of letter he received from him on 10 November 1827, defending the society’s assertions of its ‘utter incapacity to devise any means for the support of the 1600 children under their care, if the system of rapid reduction of the Parliamentary aid’; and copy of letter from Lamb to Otway, stating ‘the Lord Lieutenant directs me to convey in the strongest manner His hope and expectation that the General Board will use every exertion for the purpose of relieving the Public at the earliest possible period’, and suggests as a starting point, that the school remove from its care its many scholars of advanced age, namely those aged between 16 and 25.
