File relating to investigation by Major George Warburton, chief magistrate, County Clare, of allegation of physical abuse by Judith Dundon, against Patrick Mahon, magistrate. Includes copy letter from Thomas Comyn, Ennis, county Clare, to William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle, alleging that a servant of Mahon’s lured Dundon into a out building, where Mahon ‘beat Her in a most cruel manner’ and again the following day, had four men convey the woman to his house, and ‘had Her stripped naked and beat Her unmercifully with a “Cutting Whip”’, leaving her to return home without clothing ‘amidst the shouts of an unfeeling Rabble’,12 March 1819; also includes copy letter from Dundon to Gregory, requesting assent from Lord Lieutenant to proceed with action against Mahon ‘as the Magistrate of this town would not interfere against Him’, 20 April 1819; also includes record of proceedings before Clare Summer Assizes with sworn statements and minutes of case ‘The King and Pat[ric]k Mahon’, May 1819; also includes copy letter from Warburton, Kilrush, County Clare, to Gregory, who observes in relation to the case ‘in fact the only attempt made by “Mr Mahon”, in the way of Justification, was to prove the Infamous Character of the Accusing Party’, 15 May 1819. |
