File of material relating to incident in which a party of men under control of a parish clerk attacked and wounded a number of persons at Tynagh, County Galway. Includes letter from Anthony James McDermott, magistrate, Ramore, Loughrea, County Galway, offering observations on the state of the peasantry and making appeal against imposition of the Insurrection Act; advises that the recent proclamation would be most prudently disseminated from the pulpit and should be carefully explained to the assembled congregation; refers also to difficulties surrounding surrender of arms to parish priest, Reverend O’Donnell, taking of Oath of Allegiance and a visit of Ribbonmen to his dwelling house and theft of ‘two old fowling pieces’; adds in postscript that information has been received of a party of men led by John Grogan, clerk of the parish church, who set out in search of a number of juveniles alleged to have caused a disruption at the parish church of Tynagh: he observes that under direction of Reverend Dr Trench, magistrate, ‘they fired upon the peaceable inhabitants and took 8 or 9 boys (one of whom was badly wounded with a musket ball) prisoners to Ballinasloe’, 4 March 1820; also includes copy letter from William H Gregory, Under Secretary of Ireland, Dublin Castle to Trench, expressing determination of Lord Lieutenant to order ‘a Military Investigation’ into the incident at Tynagh, 21 April 1820. |
