Letter from Rowley Lascelles, London, concerning Irish records commission and conduct of William Shaw Mason |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
2 letters from Rowley Lascelles, 79 Jermyn Street, St. James's, London; and 10 St. James's Place, London, antiquarian and archivist, to Charles Grant, Chief Secretary, Dublin Castle, concerning his work in relation to public records in Ireland and lists prepared by him on Irish government offices and office holders, 12 September 1821. Also praises Grant for his 'extraordinary, and marked attention' to 'that sadly mismanaged Record Commission in Ireland'. Also expresses hope that Grant will warn his successor as Chief Secretary of Ireland, so that 'he will put on his guard, at least, about Mr S[haw] Mason, who is, perhaps, still at the Record Tower, as if nothing had ever appeared against him!'. Laments the negative consequences of frequent changes in Irish administration, wishing that the Chief secretary's post had 'full, confidence and unlimited sovereign powers…giving him absolute controul [sic] over all civil officers and public Boards', 27 December 1821. |
