Copy of draft letter from Chief Secretary's Office, Dublin Castle, to Dr Richard J Theodore Orpen, secretary to committee for the improvement of prisons and prison discipline Ireland, requesting the committee's suggestions on rules and regulations for classification of prisoners, August 1821. This original draft has been scored out, and draft of another similar letter written below [probably in hand of Charles Grant, Chief Secretary], requesting the same, and referring specifically to various prisons in Dublin, [August 1821]. Also notes by CSO official [probably abstracted from the committee's reply to above], on possible suggestions for Newgate, Smithfield, Richmond Penitentiary, and Four Courts Marshalsea. Includes notes on numbers of prisoners held in each, and how they might be classified according to gender and crimes committed.

Letter from Henry Newland, Mullingar, County Westmeath, to William Gregory, Under Secretary, Dublin Castle, enclosing a pamphlet on the state of Ireland [not present], and referring to an earlier pamphlet he sent from London concerning the catholic question. On the motives of the pamphlet's authors, he comments, 'Every loyal man felt apprehension, when an aggregate meeting for the purpose of presenting His Majesty with a list of grievances, was called by the Catholic leaders, that such conduct was calculated to disturb the harmony to be desired at His Majesty's arrival in this City'.
