Letters from Harriet Howell, London, requesting government support for her plan to educate female poor of Ireland

Encloses booklet containing her original letter to Grant, of 14 April 1821, which she sent to the wrong address, relating her own time spent recently in Ireland, working at the Dublin Female Orphan House. Refers to the 'imputation' placed on her character from her attendance at catholic chapels, being forced by the board to retire. Details how she wished to learn more of the religion, 'hearing continually that the Roman Catholic religion, was the source of all the wretchedness of afflicted Ireland; as the people were systematically taught disaffection, and the absurdities of a dark superstition..'. Notes that, '…being edified by the apostolic zeal of the Roman Catholic Pastors - and as many other Protestants were in the habit of going to the Roman Catholic Chapels during Lent, as well as attending the charity sermons for the relief of the R: Catholics, I could not attach the fear of singularity to my doing so'. Emphasises importance of education in Ireland, and requests a meeting to detail her plans on the subject. Includes testimonials in support of Howell's work at the Orphan House, Dublin, 1820.
