Petition of committee for relief of poor, County Wexford, concerning financial support for lunatic asylum |
SCOPE & CONTENT: |
Petition of the president and assistants instituted for the relief of the poor and for punishing vagabonds and beggars for County Wexford, to Earl Talbot, Lord Lieutenant, Dublin Castle, concerning the legislation directing financial support of the lunatic asylum, and the refusal of the grand jury to grant the usual presentments. Without additional funds, 'Your memorialists will be under the painful necessity of discharging all the Idiots & Lunatics, several of whom are in a deplorable state of Derangement, closely confined, nor can they be suffered out to air, nor be in their Cells, without the strait Waistcoat, and if discharged will be a terror to the Country'. Requests money to enable them to 'continue their accustomed protection of the poor'. Signed by Charles Jacob, mayor of Wexford, and chairman, [October 1821].
