Claiming that he was dismissed for having allowed James Murphy, who was accused of cow stealing, to escape from his custody. Adding that his colleague named Jones was restored to his situation but that Porter accused him of being drunk on duty on that day and would not hear his case. Providing a detailed account of his military service and noting that he served as a sub constable in the County Carlow police in the barony of Saint Mullins, as a sergeant in the 20th Regiment of Foot; in the Downshire Militia and in the 35th Regiment. Explaining in detail the circumstances behind his dismissal for being absent from the lighter [a type of barge] from the Brig ‘Mary’ [a sailing vessel] arriving from Quebec. Claiming that he was not given a fair trial by Mr Davis, English Surveyor General and his clerk, Mr Moratt. Adding that he was initially appointed to the position on account of the hardships endured by his family at the hands of the rebels during the Rebellion of 1798. |
